in the vr version of la noire the map sits in the dashboard of the car instead of the corner of the screen, and it works far better than it has any right to. 6 could pull the same trick in first person. newer motors put the route on the infotainment screen, older ones get a phone clipped to the dash.

the bit i keep getting stuck on is third person. i cannot picture an immersive version of it. youre looking at the roof of your own car from six feet behind, so it goes back to a little map in the corner whatever you do. anyone got something better than that

honestly just hand me the voice back. in a quarter mile, turn right. bing bong. i went back to 4 a few weeks ago and properly grinned when i got in a decent car and heard it again. still dont understand why 5 dropped it

still dont understand why 5 dropped it

theres a whole pile of little things that vanished between 4 and 5 and not one of them ever got explained

that gps is half the reason 4 is still my favourite of the modern lot. the inside of the car felt like a place you were sat in rather than a menu you were operating

the spoken directions come apart the moment youre moving at any pace though. it starts bing bonging about a turn in 100 feet and youre two streets past it before the sentence finishes. what id actually want is the rdr2 style toggle, switch the whole lot off and still be able to play the game

youre two streets past it before the sentence finishes

you never really get up to speed in liberty city anyway, the roads are too short and lumpy for it, which is half the charm of driving there.

whats it actually like with everything switched off in rdr2 though, are you navigating off signs and landmarks like its 1899

bing bong 😂 the turn is happening now and everybody behind me can deal with it

my guess on why it went is scale. liberty city is compact enough that you can record every street name worth saying out loud. leonida is a whole state of them plus the keys, thats a colossal amount of voice work for a feature half the players would mute in an hour

la noire in vr is one of the best things they have ever put their name on and nobody ever brings it up. i went through the whole thing three times

la noire in general is underrated as hell. the most interesting thing rockstar have made that wasnt a gta or a red dead and it surfaces in conversation about once a year

hold on theres a vr version of la noire??

the answer to the third person half is that you dont solve it, you let it be different. corner map while the camera is outside the car, dashboard screen once youre sat inside it. nobody is going to file a complaint because the hud changed when the entire view changed.

rdr2 already ships with about six different hud settings depending on what you can stomach, so the plumbing for doing this per camera is already sat in their own engine

what id really want is a proper companion app like rdr2 got. full map and the route on your phone or a tablet propped next to you, and almost nothing left on the telly

far cry 2 was doing this in 2008, handheld gps and a paper map you physically hold up while youre driving. still one of the best things in that game and nobody copied it

the phone on the dash is the easy half of it. half the cars in that state are going to be 30 years old with a radio and a cigarette lighter, so you stick your phone on the windscreen like every actual person does

there was navigation ui in the 2022 leak by all accounts, running on the gta 5 map because thats what they were testing on. no idea whether it survived to now but somebody was clearly building it at some point
